Our vision is becoming reality: The Construction of a world’s unique MUSEUM FOR URBAN CONTEMPORARY ART starts now!
We have been working on our vision to build the first independent and non-commercial home for urban contemporary art since 2013. With more than 200 artists, URBAN NATION is already turning Berlin into a huge outdoor museum. In mid-2017, the vision is finally becoming a reality. The URBAN NATION MUSEUM FOR URBAN CONTEMPORARY ART will offer an independent space for debates, research, interdisciplinary projects and creative dialogue. With exhibitions, workshops and a range of cross-media approaches, the museum in the heart of Berlin will be an international draw for fans, practitioners and researchers of this central art form of the 21st century. The concept was developed by museum director Yasha Young.
The museum, which will be located at Bülowstraße 7 in Berlin-Schöneberg, is co-funded by the LOTTO-Stiftung Berlin foundation and is based on the motto “Connect. Create. Care.”. The centrepiece of the museum is the growing and already-unique URBAN NATION collection that will be housed there. For three years, an international committee has been responsible for the curation of the collection. Furthermore, the museum will be home to the unique book collection of the photojournalist Martha Cooper: her pictures document the creation and development of urban art over recent decades, right up to the present day.
